Tamilnadu, the seventh most populous state in India, is the southernmost part of the country sandwiched between the Eastern Ghats and the Western Ghats. Tamilnadu, with an area of 130,058 square kilometers, ranks eleventh in the list of largest states in India considered area wise. Facing the Bay of Bengal in the east and the Indian Ocean in the south, the state's surface area is bordered by several Indian states, like Kerala to the west, Andhra Pradesh to the north and Karnataka to the northwest. Other neighboring areas of the state include Pondicherry, Gulf of Mannar and Palk Strait. The Eastern Ghats and the Western Ghats meet at Nilgiri hills. Kanyakumari, a small town of the state, forms the southernmost border of the mainland India and is also a meeting point of three oceans, namely the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. Tamilnadu is home to the great Tamil civilization and Dravidian culture, which has bestowed the state with a number of architectural marvels in the forms of temples and pilgrimage sites. As a matter of fact, Tamilnadu is known worldwide as a destination having some of the grandest temples of India, beautiful beaches, hill stations and many sites of tourist interest. One of the most urbanized state in India, Tamilnadu's contribution in the GDP growth of the country ranks the fifth largest among all states. The capital is Chennai and the official language is Tamil, the vernacular language of the local population. Among the 32 districts that comprise the state of Tamilnadu, some are well known across the nation, which include Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, Vellore and Tanjavur, besides Chennai.
