Puri, a city in Orissa, is famous nationwide for Jagannath temple and annual Rath Yatra. Jagannath Temple, built in the latter part of the eleventh century, houses several deities including Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra, which are brought out and placed in a chariot to move them around the city during the annual ritual of Rath Yatra. People from far off places come here to become a part of the festivity and fulfill their religious obligations. Puri, located on the eastern coast of India facing the Bay of Bengal, is a popular beach resort, which is unique as it offers the picturesque views of both sunrise and sunset. An ancient city chosen by Adi Shankaracharya to be one of the four sites of the Govardhana matha, it is a place famous for its several mathas. Puri attracts a large number of tourists and religious pilgrims every year. Apart from Jagannath temple and sand beach, the city has several places of tourist interest, such as Bada Thakura, Bada Danda, Bada Raja, Tata Gopinath Mandir, Bhajan Kutir, Maha Prasad, Alalanath Mandir, Maha Deepa etc. Alongside, Puri is regarded as the gateway to the Sun Temple situated at a distance of 36 kms at Konark.
