Pune is the second largest city of the Indian state of Maharashtra after Mumbai. It is the eighth most populous city in India with an estimated population of about five million residents. Situated on the Deccan Plateau, Pune lies at the meeting point of the Mula and the Mutha, two of its prominent rivers. The Pavana and the Indrayani are the other rivers that flow through the northwestern border of the metropolitan city. Koyna Dam, situated about 100 km south of the city, lies at the epicenter of a seismically active zone. Sahyadri mountain range separates the city from the Arabian sea. It is mostly a hilly region with an average altitude of 560 meter above sea level. The tallest mountain is Vetal Hill, which is at a height of 800 meter from the sea level.
The region of present day Pune district rose into prominence during the time of Peshwa rulers, who made it the political administrative center of their dominion. The British rulers have transformed the area into a cantonment town and made it the second capital of Bombay Presidency. At present, Pune is leading the nation in providing excellent educational facilities to local populace as well as students coming from other parts of the country and abroad. Pune has a well-developed industrial base with focus on Information Technology, Manufacturing and Automotive companies. A major destination for better employment prospects, Pune attracts a large number of migrants from across the country every year.
