Pondicherry, now known as Puducherry, is a Union Territory consisting of four non-contiguous territories lying in different states of India. These four territories are Pondicherry or Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam and Mahe. The Union Territory of Pondicherry has a total area of 492 sq. km with the city of Pondicherry being the largest followed by Karaikal. The areas covered by Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam and Mahe are 293 sq. km, 160 sq. km, 30 sq. km and 9 sq. km respectively. Moreover, Puducherry and Karaikal are both enclaves of Tamilnadu, while Yanam and Mahe lie within the respective territories of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The Union Territory of Puducherry has four official languages, namely Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and French. Pondicherry city still reflects the influence of its colonial rulers, the French and the Dutch, in its city plan and the architectural design of many buildings. As an educational center of southern India, it has about seven engineering colleges, seven medical colleges and ten arts, science and technical colleges with several more soon to come up. Some of the famous places in Pondicherry include Aurobindo Ashram, Auroville Beach, Botanical Garden, Holy Rosary Church, Chunnambar Boat House, Kamatchi Amman Temple, Old Navy Pier, Puducherry Beach, Romain Rolland Library and Villianur Mother Mary Church.
