About Nagpur

The excavations of Mehir burial sites at Drughamna suggest that there existed a megalithic culture in eighth century BC around the area covered by the present Nagpur. The recorded history of the city mentions the name of King Vindhyasakti, who ruled the region for the first time during the latter part of third century. Later it came under the dominion of Vakataka kings in fourth century and was also used as the capital city by the king Prithvisena I. However, it was not before tenth century when the region came to be known as Nagpur.

In 1702, Bakth Buland Shah, a Gond king of Deogarh founded the city of Nagpur by joining twelve small villages situated on the bank of the river Nag. Soon, Nagpur came under the influence of Maratha rulers with Raghoji Bhonsle of Vidhabha taking control of it in 1743. Afterwards, it remained more or less under the control of his successors and other indigenous rulers until the supremacy of the British prevailed after the famous battle of Sitabuldi. Subsequently, it was incorporated into the British residency in 1853.
Later it was made the capital of Central Provinces in 1861 and soon, a municipality was established to develop urban areas. During the freedom struggle, Nagpur became a hotbed of nationalist movement. It played a host to two annual sessions of Indian National Congress, one in 1891 and the other in 1920. The decision to initiate a nationwide non-cooperation movement was taken at the Nagpur session of congress in 1920, which also saw the foundation of Nagpur University in 1923. Nagpur participated actively in the Quit India Movement in 1942, and many of its freedom fighters attained the glory of martyrdom during the movement.

Nagpur was made the capital of Madhya Pradesh, when India got freedom. The old municipality gave way to the formation of Nagpur Municipal Corporation in 1951, which took the onus of building its infrastructure and carrying out the tasks of real estate development. Soon Nagpur became a part of the Maharashtra state as a consequence of the reorganization of India states in 1956. Moreover, it was given the status of the second capital of Maharashtra. The present picture in Nagpur is conducive to a rapid development of real estate sector owing to the commendable growth of its economy. A Multi-model International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN) is undergoing development, which is expected to give an unprecedented spur to the commercial activities in the city .
