About Kota |

| |
Though the formal history of Kota begins in the twelfth century AD, with the foundation of Bundi and Hadoti by a Hada Chieftain known as Rao Deva, there are sources that give an inkling about the possibility of it being inhabited by prehistoric people. The modern city and its adjoining areas are dotted with a significant number of caves dating back to the period much earlier than the current era, which are supposed to be the abodes of these prehistoric people.
The city's rich cultural legacy and historical connection have been exemplified by the presence of several forts, palaces and paintings even to this date. Historically, it was a Kotya Bhil warrior who first built a fort here, after having been defeated by Jait Singh of Bundi some eight hundred years ago. The fort, which was further modified by subsequent rulers, is still in existence, and is known commonly among the local populace as the Garh Palace.

Kota was among the territories held in possession by Rao Ratan Sing, the ruler of Bundi, in the early seventeenth century. When Mughal emperor Shah Jahan ascended to the throne of Delhi, he made Rao Madho Singh, the second son of Rao Ratan Singh, the ruler of Kota, and thus the independent state of Kota came into existence in 1631. Since the time of its coming into existence, Kota has been a place dignified by the royal tradition and exceptional gallantry of its Rajput rulers.
The subsequent years of Rajput rule saw Kota growing in terms of geographical area and revenue, not to speak of its rise in power and glory. Maharao Bhim Singh was a prominent name in its history who was the first to get the title of 'Maharao' and hold a 'Mansab' of five thousand. There were others who enriched the region with specimens of fine architecture and Rajput style fresco paintings. Today Kota has a significantly rich cultural heritage to exhibit the royal glory of its historical past.
Kota has emerged as a fine blend of ancient glory and modern style. As the fifth largest city of the Indian state of Rajasthan, Kota has been developed and facilitated with advanced infrastructural facilities to get it transformed into a leading industrial hub of the state. There are industries that engaged in the making of chemicals, synthetic fibers, fertilizers, tyrecord and sophisticated instruments, and opportunities are being thrown open for the establishment of many more industries. Recently, Kota has acquired a distinct position in the realm of professional education, with students consisting mostly of medical and engineering aspirants coming here from all parts of country to fulfill their dreams.
