Jodhpur Map |
Jodhpur is the second largest city of Rajasthan, and is located mainly in the austere landscape of the Thar Desert, the largest desert in India. Its reputation as an important center of the erstwhile princely state of the same name and also of the Marwar kingdom, coupled with the location it enjoys in the center of the state has made it a travel hub and a major tourist destination. There are palaces, forts and temples all around to give much evidence of its royal lineage and great historical past. There is a thick stone wall that surrounds the old city of Jodhpur, containing many marvels of cultural history. The total land area is 75.50 square kilometers and the people inhabiting the area are close to a million. A hot and humid climate with large variation in rainfall characterizes the entire geography of the region. Handicraft is the largest industry followed by Tourism. Some of the historical monuments in the city include Umaid Bhawan Palace, Mehrangarh Fort, Osiyan Temple and Jaswant Thada. Other important places of tourist interest include Mandore Park, Kaylana Lake, Soorsagar and Museum. The city is sometimes referred to as the Blue City because many houses surrounding the Mehrangarh Fort are tinged with indigo color, a result of excessive whitewashing.
