About Jodhpur |

| |
Several centuries before the foundation of Jodhpur by a Rajput chieftain known as Rao Jodha in 1459, the area covered by the present district of Jodhpur was supposed to be a part of the Gurjara-Pratihara empire, which lasted till the eleventh century AD. Rao Jodha was an brave warrior and able ruler of the Rathore clan, who soon brought a vast region consisting of Jodhpur and its surrounding territories under his control and laid the foundation of Marwar kingdom. Jodhpur became the political center of Marwar kingdom when Rao Jodha transferred his capital to this newly founded city. Its location on a trade route that connected Delhi with Gujarat proved advantageous for its financial growth in subsequent years.
The descendants of Rao Jodha continued to rule Marwar, however, with the rise of Mughals in Delhi, they had to acknowledge their supremacy over this part of the country. As a result, the position of Jodhpur was now relegated to a mere fief under the Mughal Empire.

However, this settlement brought much prosperity in the region as the city grew in financial and other aspects by coming into contact with other parts of the country. The mutual understanding between the Marwar rulers and the Mughal emperors received a set back when Aurangzeb ascended to the throne of Delhi. Marwar got back its lost status upon the death of Aurangzeb in 1707 and even got the opportunity to free itself completely from the control of the Mughals, but it could not do so owing to its scheming courtiers who were always found to be plotting against one another for gaining control over the kingdom.
The Marathas intervened and seized the control from the declining Mughals to become the master of the region, however, they too could not do much in bringing peace to Marwar. Peace finally prevailed once the Jodhpur rulers came into an alliance with the British in 1818. After gaining much needed peach and stability, the princely state of Jodhpur ushered into a new era marked with flourishing trade and exceptional financial growth. The Marwaris moved out of the state to seek business opportunities in different parts of the country, and soon they were found to be dominating the trade market across India.
When India became independent, Marwar along with other erstwhile Rajputana states was merged in the newly created state of Rajasthan, and Jodhpur became a district of this state. Since independence Jodhpur Development Authority has consistently been contributing in the development process of the city along the modern line. Today we can see the Jodhpur real estate industry making rapid progress in the realm of residential and commercial construction.
