Jammu Kashmir, situated in the lap of Himalayas, is the north most state of India. It shares boundaries with two countries, namely Pakistan and China to the north, east and west, while the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab form its southern boundary line. The topography of the state divides it into three distinct regions, namely Jammu, the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. The Kashmir Valley is renowned worldwide as a site to offer a panoramic view of Himalayan mountains and beautiful landscapes. Ladakh is known for remote mountain beauty and unique culture, while the region of Jammu lies in the Shivalik range at the foot of Himalayan mountains. The Kashmir valley is separated from Ladakh region by the Himalayas whereas the Pir Panjal range situated at the south and the west of the valley separates it from the northern plain of the country. Apart from the Kashmir Valley, there are Tawi Valley, Poonch Valley, Lidder Valley, Chenab Valley and Sind Valley dotting the landscape of the state. Major rivers are Indus, Jhelum, Ravi, Tawi and Chenab. The longest Himalayan glacier known as the Siachen Glaciers is found in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is 70 km long and is found at an average altitude of 5753 meters above sea level. Srinagar is the political capital and the city of Jammu is regarded as the winter capital of the state. Jammu is also the center of major commercial activities in the state. Languages spoken and understood in Jammu & Kashmir are Kashmiri, Urdu and Dogri.
