Jaisalmer is an important tourist destination located within the state of Rajasthan in India. Situated on a ridge of yellowish sandstone in the middle of the Thar Desert, the region comprising the district of Jaisalmer is bound by Bikaner on the northeast, Barmer on the south, Jodhpur on the east and Pakistan on the northwest. The city of Jaisalmer, sometimes referred to as "The Golden City", is the district headquarters and a land of finely-sculptured buildings and temples. The entire region, being a part of the Thar Desert, is characterized by sandy soil, low vegetation and dry and hot climate. There is very less water available for the purpose of agriculture, which depends mainly on the meager amount of rainfall in monsoon months. Kakni is the only river, smaller enough to be classified as a rivulet, which ends at a lake known as the Bhuj-Jhil. Jaisalmer is a place to wander around the quiet tract of sandy land or take a camel safari through the desert dune away from the hustle and bustle of the city life to unwind in the most wonderful way. Some of the major attractions for the tourist visiting here include Jaisalmer Fort, various Havelis including Patwon ki Haveli, Salim Sing ki Haveli, Mehra Haveli and Nathmalji ki Haveli, Gadsisar Lake and several museums, such as Desert Culture Center & Museum, Government Museum and Jaisalmer Folklore Museum.
