Jabalpur is one of the largest cities of Madhya Pradesh, a state located in the central part of India. It is the headquarters of Jabalpur district, which is spread in an area of 10,160 square kilometers within the Mahakoshal region of Madhya Pradesh. According to 2001 census, more than two million people were residing in the area covered by the district, which is situated on the watersheds formed by the Narmada and the Son rivers. Most part of the district lies within the valley of the Narmada, which flows through a gorge commonly known as the Marble rocks. The valley and the adjoining plains consisting of alluvial soils is a fertile land area, suitable for the cultivation of sorghum, rice, wheat, millets, cotton, pulses, oilseeds and sugarcane, among many others. The city of Jabalpur is known for the beautiful collection of Marble Rocks, which drives here a large number of visitors every year. Myriad lakes and lush green landscape provide an excellent site for peaceful vacations and meditation. Moreover, the city is connected to all major locations in India by air, rail and road.
