Indore is regarded as the commercial capital of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is the largest city of the state as well, with an area of 214 square kilometer and an estimated population of about four million residents. Located on the Malwa Plateau, it lies just north of the Vindhya Mountain Range. A historical ciy which has once served as the capital of the princely state of Indore and also as the summer capital of the former state of Central India. The main language spoken and understood is Hindi, however, there are sizable population speaking and understanding Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Sindhi and also Bengali. In fact, Indore is the only city in central India that presents a motley of different Indian cultures. The district of Indore has always been a center of all commercial activities in the Central India. Today, it has established itself as a strong industrial base, with the contribution coming from the state government as well as private initiatives. Moreover, the Optel Software Technology Park has been set up by the M.P. State Electronics Development Corporation to give a further boost to the commercial development of the area. Strategic location and good connectivity with metro cities like Mumbai and Delhi through road, rail and air have also contributed in the growth of all kinds of industries here. Emerging as a major educational hub, the city boasts of the existence of a number of well-known institutions including the Indore chapter of Indian Institute of Management, India's best business school. Other institutions of repute in the city include Indore University, Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS), and Shri Vaishnav Polytechnic.
