Gwalior Map |
Gwalior, a prominent city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, lies 122 km south of Agra and is regarded as an important location in the Grid region of North India. Covering an area of 286.6 sq. km, the city is home to over 12 lakh people. The landscape of Gwalior is dominated by an isolated outcrop, which provides the base for the massive Gwalior Fort built by Raja Man Singh Tomar. Recognized as one of the most invincible forts of the country, it is surrounded by high walls and situated atop a hill with sharp inclination. Towards the east of the city lies the old town of Gwalior, while Morar is found to be at its western side. Lashkar, a town associated with the origin of a military camp is located to the south of the city. The district of Gwalior carries forward the legacy of rich culture and fine architecture. The mausoleum of Ghous Mohammad, a famous sixteenth century saint and the tomb of Tansen, one of the 'Nine Jewels' of Emperor Akbar's court are two splendid examples of early Mughal architecture. Gujari Mahal, another specimen of fine architecture, is located next to the tomb of Tansen. Jai Vilas Palace embodying the balanced combination of Tuscan, Corinthian and Italian styles of architecture is a good example of Gwalior's architectural heritage.
