Cuttack is regarded as the cultural and commercial capital of Orissa. The city, with a long history spanning more a thousand years, has served as the political capital of the region presently covered by the state of Orissa for almost nine centuries, before losing this distinctive status to Bhubaneswar in 1948. These two cities are popularly known as the "twin cities" of Orissa. Most of the areas covered by the district of Cuttack lie in the delta region of river Mahanadi. There is another river in the city named as Kathajodi river, which is one of the main tributaries of the river Mahanadi. As the second largest city of the state, Cuttack has a population figure of 750,000 as per the estimation in 2007. The word "Cuttack" is a Sanskrit term signifying a military camp or a fortified Government seat. Falling in a hot and humid climate zone, the city is largely characterized by a hot summer with a maximum temperature of over 40 degree centigrade and a mild winter with an average temperature of 10 degree centigrade. Most of the rainfall, it receives, occurs during the monsoon season, which lasts from June to October. The annual average rainfall in Cuttack is 144.39 cm. Major places in the city include Barabati Stadium, Paramahansa Nath Temple, Cuttack Chandi Temple, Bhattarika Temple, The Gurudwara Daatan Sahib, Qadam-e-Rasool and Shahi Mosque. Cuttack is also known as the "Millenium City".
