About Cuttack

The Keshari dynasty was supposed to be ruling over the area presently known as Cuttack during the fag end of the first millennium. We come to know about the reign of Keshari dynasty, though partly, from a chronicle of Jagannath temple of Puri known as Madalapanji. Later Cuttack was found to be ruled by Anangabhimadeva of Ganga dynasty, who made it the capital of his kingdom. From thirteenth century to fifteenth century, the city remained under the control of the various rulers of the Ganga dynasty.

Cuttack continued to be the capital of Orissa when the Gajapati Kings of Solar dynasty took control of the latter in 1435. After the fall of this dynasty n 1541, the destiny of Cuttack fell into the hands of the Mughals.
Later in the eighteenth century when the Mughal rulers were found to be incapable of holding their authority over this part of the country, the Maratha took advantage and made it a part of their territory.

Cuttack soon rose into prominence, mainly because of its strategic location, as a business center serving well the English Merchants of Bengal in keeping trade relations with the Marathas. Its significance as a trading center prompted the British to occupy it completely, and they succeeded in their attempt in 1803. Subsequently, the East India Company made it the capital of the Orissa division in 1816, and it remained under the colonial rule, maintaining its position as the capital city until India gained independence in 1947. After independence, Cuttack ceased to be the chief political and administrative center of the state, with Bhubaneswar becoming the new capital of Orissa. However, it retained its position as the chief commercial center of the state.

Cuttack started to rise on the lines of modern city when the booming economy of the country increased the income of the people quite significantly. Cuttack, being the commercial hub of Orissa, provided an ideal choice for the people who wanted to secure their deposits in real estate for a long term benefit. The state government took special note of its infrastructural development so as to attract more investors from other parts of the country as well as from abroad.

The Cuttack Development Authority and the Cuttack Municipal Corporation are found to be active in the district with several growth projects in order to give the city an important place on the map of India. Today, Cuttack boasts of a world class stadium known as Barabati Stadium, a large number of educational institutions including some of the well known research centers of the country and multitudes of national and international companies.
