Amritsar, a holy city in the state of Punjab, is known worldwide for the Golden Temple, the most sacred place of the Sikh community. The Golden Temple, locally known as Harmandir Sahib, besides being the most revered shrine of the Sikh religion, is also an epitome of architectural marvel that attracts a large number of tourists from across the globe. Moreover, Bhagvan Valmiki's ashram, the birth place of Lava and Kush, is situated at a close distance of Amritsar, making it a holy city for Hindus as well. Located in the northwestern part of the country, the district of Amritsar is just 30 kilometers east of Lahore, a city in Pakistan. According to 2001 census, the district had a population of 3,695,077 people, almost half of which reside in the city itself. Amritsar derives its name from Amrit-Saagar, which means "The Ocean of the Nectar of Immortality". Some of the major industries in the city include tourism, agriculture, carpets, fabrics, handicrafts and light engineering.
