Ahmedabad, the commercial hub of Gujarat, is the largest city in the state and a major center for urban agglomerations in India. The city has a population of about 52 lakh residents. It was founded in 1411 when Sultan Ahmad Shah, the then ruler of the Sultanate of Gujarat needed a city to serve as the capital of the region under his dominion. Ahmedabad got its name from its founder, Sultan Ahmad Shah. Further development of the city was carried out during British rule when it was expanded to include adjoining areas. During the same period, the city grew into the most important location for the development of textile industry. Popularly known as "the Manchester of the East", the city of Ahmedabad is still at the forefront of total textile produce in the country. When the state of Gujarat was carved out from the erstwhile Bombay Presidency in 1960, Ahmedabad was made the capital and the city rose into prominence. Later in 1970, the capital shifted to Gandhinagar, however, the importance of the city as the commercial center of the state remained intact. Today, the district of Ahmedabad is undergoing a major construction boom and an accelerated real estate growth along with the increasing population. The city is rising as a major center for higher education, information technology and related industries.
